Starting with a small weekly group in Deptford, this new space will offer occupational projects, creativity, connection and specialist support for people living with brain injury south of the river.
This expansion marks a major milestone in our new 2026-2031 Strategic Priorities, which commit us to growing what we do thoughtfully, reaching under-served communities, and making access to brain injury support fairer across London. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped us reach this point and excited to welcome our very first members through the doors.
For many years, our East London community has shaped the projects, culture and support that make Headway London what it is today. Through creativity, friendship, therapeutic support and meaningful co-production, members have helped create a community unlike any other.
As our strategy makes clear, however, we are not simply copying and pasting that model elsewhere.
Instead, we are planting the seeds of what has worked so beautifully before and building something entirely new that reflects local needs, local culture and the voices of people with brain injury in South London.
The new service has been developed with co-production at its heart and will continue to evolve alongside members, families and local partners as it grows.
Reflecting on the significance of the launch, Sarah Lantsbury, Chief Executive, said:
“I think it’s important that people affected by brain injury can access support wherever they live. South London has seen a significant gap in services since the closure of Headway South East London and North West Kent, and we’re incredibly grateful that SELNWK trusted us with their remaining funds to begin this work and provide long-term, sustainable support in the area.”
At its heart, the new service is about creating a place where people feel welcomed, connected and supported.
Sarah added:
“More than anything, I hope our members feel at home. I hope they know they’ve got someone to turn to, and that they build friendships that last a lifetime.”
Looking to the future, she is excited about the opportunities the new service will bring for people affected by brain injury across the capital, expanding our offering from 13 to 18 boroughs.
“I’m excited that our support is reaching more and more people, and that our impact will reach further across London. I’m excited for more people to experience the magic of Headway London, and I can’t wait to get to know the members of our new services.”
Because access to specialist brain injury support should not depend on where you live, and the difference a local community can make cannot be underestimated.
This is just the beginning. We look forward to learning, growing and building this new community together in the months and years ahead.
